MATT TURNER
Born: 19th March 1974
Nationality: American
Resident: Monaco and Oxford
Status: Single
Debut: 100cc 2-stroke karting in 1991
Career Highlights:
- In his first race, on an “outlaw” kart track in Palmyra Michigan, Matt attempted
a late pass on another competitor and ran into him. The child’s father later attacked
Matt with the broken nurf bar!
- Matt’s first circuit race was in the Skip Barber Formula Ford championship
at Gratten Michigan, in 1995. He went on to win three races in his debut season
and was named Rookie of the Year.
- Matt was a works driver for Ford SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) in 1997,
taking the Mustang to 4th in the SpeedVision Cup, a class 5th in the Daytona 24
Hrs, and 4th at Sebring.
- Driving a Chrysler Viper with Chamberlain Motorsport, Matt achieved what he
considers the highlight of his career (to date) by finishing 3rd in class in the
1998 Daytona 24 Hours.
- “Touring car racing was a very humbling experience” is how Matt views his
season in the Vauxhall Vectra SRi V6 Challenge. The change to front wheel drive
did not suit his style, but by the end of the season he was a regular top five
finisher and improving rapidly.
- Matt recently took his test for a conventional driver’s licence. He passed
first time, although the examiner marked him down for being “too slow”. Matt is
not displeased by this indictment!
- Matt is an accomplished skier. He captained his university ski team and finished
6th in the 1987 Junior Olympics Downhill. He also speaks fluent French and Swedish.
- More easily satisfied than partner Edward Horner, Matt’s ambition is to win
the 24 Hours of Daytona, the Le Mans 24 Hours, or the Sebring 12 Hours - any one
will do
