Round 3 Sprint Race, Donington Park, April 28th - Parr Motorsport’s
Barbara Armstrong was the innocent victim as one of the race-leaders spun on the
opening lap of the Sprint Race, Round Three of the 2001 Michelin Porsche Cup.
Approaching Coppice, two thirds of the way through the opening lap, Armstrong
was comfortably holding fourth when Pete Chambers lost it going into the crested
right hander. The championship leader took to the gravel, then rapidly regained
the track and veered across the racing line. Armstrong’s first thoughts as she
arrived on the scene were "Whoaa, I’m up to third here!", but was then
astonished as he picked up speed to cross directly in front of her. "I had
nowhere to go!" she exclaimed. "If I braked, I’d hit him. If I took
avoiding action, I’d hit him. So I braced myself . . . and he hit me!"
The Porsche Cars GB car took the impact on the front three-quarter, and Armstrong
was sent spinning off the track. The car would not restart, so she clambered out
of the car.
The marshals were quickly on the scene. "I got a fireman’s lift back to
the side from a very nice marshal," explained Armstrong. "Pete saw me
being carried, ‘I thought you were injured’ he says." Fortunately not.
" I was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time," said a philosophical
Armstrong.
The incident means that Barbara will start tomorrow’s Feature Race from the
back of the grid. With the forecast for rain, she should have an interesting race.
