Round Three Feature Race, Donington Park - Barbara Armstrong did exceptionally
well to fight back strongly from the rear of the grid to finish a charging seventh
in Sunday’s Michelin Porsche Cup Feature Race.
Starting from the back row in the rolling start was something Barbara took
in her stride. She thought herself lucky to be racing at all, having examined
the damage inflicted on her car by Pete Chamber’s Porsche in yesterday’s Sprint
race. The engineers were working through until the early hours repairing the front
nearside quarter, where the wing, radiator and front upright had taken the full
force of the impact. Fortunately the chassis had not been deformed.
After enduring wet conditions in nearly all the previous rounds, and again
yesterday, the sight of bright sunshine and a dry track might have implied some
fast, trouble-free racing. Not a bit of it. Out at the end of Starkey’s Straight
it was chaos from start to finish.
Armstrong was one of those to benefit from the first lap carnage at Fogarty’s,
where four cars went off. That, together with a strong start, saw her through
to 16th. By the end of the next lap she’d claimed 12th. At the moment she exited
the complex next time through, two more drivers chose Fogarty’s to redistribute
the contents of their Porsche parts bin. This time the debris was considerable,
and directly across the racing line.
Out came the yellow and black flags. With no overtaking allowed while the track
was cleared, Barbara Armstrong was able to close up on the pack ahead of her.
Once racing resumed she was caught briefly behind the battle for the Class
2 lead, but eventually got by to be running 8th overall with five minutes to go.
On the next lap she dived through on the inside of Elliott at all-action Fogarty’s
to take seventh.
The margin to Demeroutis in sixth was too great for her to hope for another
place with only two minutes to go, but she put on a good sprint to cross the line
just five seconds adrift.
