KELVIN BURT
Born: 7 September 1967
Nationality: English
Resident: Tamworth, England
Status: Single
Debut: 100cc karting, age 14
Career Highlights:
- Kelvin discovered his early passion for karting while on holiday as a teenager.
He enrolled with the Jim Russell Racing Drivers School and won the school’s qualifying
events and scholarship. Then, in 1987, he picked up the Duckhams National Scholarship.
- Two seasons in British FF1600 brought Kelvin to the forefront of a new and
exciting generation of racing drivers. Twice his title claim was thwarted by one
man - David Coulthard.
- In a one-off touring car appearance at Oulton Park in 1990 Kelvin drove the
second Sytner Motorsport BMW in Class B of the BTCC. He secured a class win and
established a new lap record.
- In 1991 Kelvin dominated Formula Vauxhall Lotus with 7 poles and 9 wins, clinching
the title with rounds to spare. He was named Autosport’s Club Driver of the Year,
and subsequently iced this with the BRDC’s Graham Hill Trophy for top British
driver.
- Kelvin followed up a powerful debut F3 season in 1992 by winning the title
in 1993 with Paul Stewart Racing. He was widely tipped for a future in Formula
1, and tested for both Williams and Tyrrell.
- In 1993 Kelvin was awarded the Paul Warwick Memorial Trophy. His nine F3 victories
matched Johnny Herbert’s 1987 record, making Kelvin only the second Briton to
achieve this feat.
- Without a full-time drive in 1994, Kelvin made guest appearances in the Porsche
Supercup Grand Prix support. His win at Silverstone made him the sole British
driver ever to win a race in the series.
- Kelvin made his debut in the Macau GP in 1994, finishing second. The next
year he won with a new lap record.
- Three good years in British Touring Cars began in 1995 with Ford. In 1996
he replaced Tim Harvey at TWR Volvo, but a frightening accident at Oulton Park
seriously damaged his title hopes. His form returned, however, and he won one
race and finished second to Alain Menu in the revived Tourist Trophy event.
- In 1998 Kelvin headed East, joining TOM’s Toyota in Japan to contest Japanese
touring cars and GT. A consistent front-runner, he took his Toyota Chaser GT to
victory and fastest lap at Sugo
