CONOR FLYNN - Rally Driver

Conor Flynn celebrated his 13th Birthday with a trip to Sweden, to
drive on a frozen lake. He joined 96 other rally drivers for the trip,
with the 205 Challenge.
Conor was teamed up with BRC Stars Champion 20 yr old James Wozencroft
and 205 Challenge beginners Champion 19 yr old Tom Walster. The week
began with tuition for Conor from ex works Seat driver Barbara
Armstrong, working in the 280bhp Subaru Impreza and an 80bhp
Renault Clio, technique was refined, Conor commented “ Barbara
is amazing, she showed me just to look for traction and grip, which
was really noticeable in the Clio”.
Nurburgring record holder and pro race driver Michael Vergers was
next in line to help Conor, with Michael, using his keen observation
skills to give Conor yet more valuable insights to Lines, corner dynamics
and smoothness.
With Manager Kevin Furber coordinating matters, the 3 young guns were
soon flying after just 15 hrs of intensive tuition, from the experts,
exploring the limits of grip available on the 2.3km and 3.5km stages
of frozen ice.
With only short ice studs being used, the cars were able to slide easily
so maintaining full control took high concentration.
It wasn’t all Rallying on the lake though, with theory classes
headed by ex Peugeot factory driver Kevin, videos were examined, theories
put forward and practices refined on the lake in the -22 degree conditions.
Evenings were taken up with sledging, skiing and snowball fights, along
with the popular dunking poor victims into snowbanks!!!

After 5 days of lake driving the difference was obvious, with a timed
final lap of both the stages linked together, Conor setting fastest
time in the Subaru, edging out his dad!! With Tom Walster just having
the slenderest of margins over James Wozencroft, Wozie said “
this has just been the best week of my life, I am so confident with
left foot braking now”.
While Tom and James go into their BRC campaigns this year, Conor will
be following WRC fiesta driver Tom Curtis, plus following all the 205
Challenge and BRC rounds.
Conors next tuition will be from Liz Linford who will be looking at
his fitness and devising a campaign for him, Barbara will be helping
Conor with a gravel test in May, where she will be joined by ex WRC
Production Champion Martin Rowe.
It’s a busy year for Conor, with his grasstrack racing starting
in March, but his rallying career is where its at, so we will keep you
informed.
Website to be devised shortly watch for www.conorflynn.co.uk
Conor would like to thank 205 Challenge, MQ racewear, Hankook, Redline,
and of course Kevin, Barbara, Michael, Dom, Lizzie and Martin
